Spotlight on Success
I would like to nominate the Speech Class of 2017 for Spotlight for Success. This class has completed a one semester course dedicated to presenting speeches. We started off easy with “About Me” speeches where they were able to read straight from a script. As time moved forward, they gave demonstration speeches which was required to complete and follow an MLA outline. This class also successfully completed Veterans Day speeches where three students were chosen to win money! Daniel Hittle even presented his speech for the entire community during the Veterans Day program. We ended the year with informative speeches where presenters were graded on everything from MLA outline, works cited pages, to eye contact and a good speaking voice. During the final presentations, all students commented on the differences they saw in each other from the start of the semester to the end. Students who used to be afraid to be in front of the room, were asking to go first. Don’t worry, we had fun too! In between speech projects, students played improv games which required them to be in front of the class and to think fast! So parents, if you notice their answers becoming more witty when you ask them if they did their chores, you can thank me for that!
I appreciate this class for making a comfortable and supportive environment for all. They all realized they had skills to work on. In addition, they are were able to find the value in what it means to be a good speaker.
It was a fun semester.
