Empower Your Genius
Empower Your Genius!

The Lyons-Decatur School is starting the 2014-2015 year with a new motto, “Unleash the Genius Within You”. The motto is simply saying everybody is smart in their own way. To incorporate this motto the school has started a new tradition, “Empower Your Genius” time. Every two weeks the whole school goes by a two o’clock out schedule. From 2:00-3:40, the high school and junior high students are assigned to be partnered up with an elementary classroom. During this time we are taught how to be a better student.
The most current lesson is accepting criticism or a consequence. The three steps are very simple. First, you should always be looking at the person in charge at the time. Second, after the person in charge has given you your consequence or instruction you say, “Okay”. Last, you should never argue with your teacher or the person in charge. We practice these skills by giving each other funny consequences and having your partner learn the right way to respond. By doing this the students will learn the proper skills on how to accept a consequence in a fun, educational way.
The new principal, Mr. Lahm, last year’s history teacher, is the one who came up with the idea. He says, “...There was a need for students to have a chance to learn important social and leadership skills”. I asked him what he planned to achieve by doing this, and he replied, “We want the students to grow into positive leaders”. So far the school has had two “Empower Your Genius” sessions and I feel like it has already made a difference. I asked Principal Lahm what he thought and he said, “The idea is a work in progress”. Hopefully by the end of the 2014-2015 year everyone in the school is a better person and a better leader.
