Six students qualify for state speech

Lyons-Decatur Northeast will be represented at the state speech tournament by six team members. The team members are Rebekah Harlan, Heidi Miller, Tatiayana Harris, Martin Long, Abby Peterson, and Brent Miller. The students had to finish in the top three at the district contest held in Leigh last Wednesday. The OID of Corey McCullock, Jacob Maslonka, Augusto Salazar, William Weiland, and Garret King placed 6th at districts, but did not qualify for state.
Representing LDNE at state in Serious Prose is Rebekah Harlan. Rebekah placed 2nd at districts with her piece about a disabled lady finding love. Rebekah is a senior at LDNE and this is her 2nd year as a speech team member.
Heidi Miller will be presenting her informative speech about Rural Migration Trends at the state meet. Heidi placed 3rd at districts. Her speech is about the movement of people from rural areas to the urban areas. Heidi is a junior and this is her 3rd year on the speech team.
Tatiayana Harris will represent the team with her poetry selection. Tatiayana earned 3rd at districts. Her poetry is about the love between a mother and a child. Tatiayana is a junior and this is her first year on the speech team.
Martin Long will be representing LDNE in two events at the state meet. The first event is entertainment speaking. Martin placed 1st in this event. It is a humorous piece discussing his hate of scary movies. Martin is a freshman and this is his 1st year on the speech team.
The duet team of Martin Long and Abby Peterson will perform Better Football through High School Chemistry at state. This is a funny skit about a female head football coach and her assistant as they try to get their team to score their first touchdown. Abby and Martin placed 2nd in districts. Abby is also a freshman and this is her first year on the speech team.
