5th and 6th Graders Sweep Spelling Bee
It was a banner day for Lyons-Decatur 5th and 6th grade students at the Burt County Spelling Bee, which was held Thursday, February 18, in the Lyons-Decatur High School gym. 28 students from Oakland-Craig, Tekamah-Herman, and the host school participated in an intense competition which needed several rounds before judges were able to narrow the field to four finalists. When the last word was spelled, the top four places were all claimed by Lyons-Decatur students.
Fifth grade participants were Cole Christoffersen, Joey O’Connor, Brock Vetick, and Jacob Whitaker. Sixth grade participants were Brianne Haskell, Martin Long, Brent Miller, and Mickayla Petersen.

The winners of the 2010 Burt County Spelling Bee – Elementary Division were: 4th – Jacob Whitaker; 3rd – Brianne Haskell; 2nd – Brent Miller; 1st – Brock Vetick.
