NPPD Speaker Comes to Northeast

by Carrie Andersen

February 23, 2010

On Friday, February 19th, the elementary students got the chance to hear Chad Johnson of NPPD speak about electrical safety, environmental issues, and renewable and nonrenewable resources.

The kindergartners and first graders listened to Mr. Johnson speak about electrical safety.   Mr. Johnson asked for a volunteer to come up front.  He proceeded to dress Brennan Ferguson with the safety clothing that a lineman would wear.  He explained the necessity of each article including double gloves (leather& rubber) and eye protectors. The children had a lot of questions for him.  After answering them he went into more detail on the dangers of electricity and the speed in which it travels.

The second, third, and fourth graders listened to Mr. Johnson speak about environmental issues. The kids were shocked to hear that a plasma television uses as much electricity on as it does off.   Even though this is true, we learned that there are many ways we can help save our natural resources.  Through a few demonstrations the students learned about using coal, wind, hydro, and solar power to get an idea of the many ways energy can be produced.

The fifth and sixth grader listened to Mr. Johnson speak about renewable and nonrenewable resources.  This tied in well for the fifth graders, because we are currently studying renewable and nonrenewable resources.  Mr. Johnson discussed examples of each of the two kinds of resources, and explained how Nebraska utilizes or doesn’t utilize each of them. Through a few demonstrations these students also learned about using coal, wind, hydro, and solar power to get an idea of the many ways energy can be produced.
