Students Learn to Appreciate the Guitar

by John Mayo

October 08, 2009

The bell rings and students rush into Mr. Mayo's office to grab their guitars, but where are they going?  The guitars are gone and the classroom is nearly empty.  What could be going on?  Then you hear it.  Doh-ing.   Doh-ing.  Under closer inspection you see several students carefully positioned throughout the hall tuning their guitars.

Recently Northeast Music Appreciation have students have started a fun and new unit.  They traded their textbooks in for guitars as their primary instrument of learning.  Lyons-Decatur Northeast has join the growing ranks of schools across the nation that have started to use the guitar to teach music concepts.

Music Appreciation I and Music Appreciation II make up the year long Music Appreciation class which is open to any high school student.  Concepts that students will learn using the guitar include pitch, tuning, chords, reading notes, independent study, performing diverse music, performance technique, and many others.
