What swam the seas long before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, replaces its own broken teeth, lives 10 to 20 years, and fights off sickness better than humans? Sharks, of course! Mrs. Wakeley's second grade class was busy studying shark facts. It is estimated that 10 million sharks are being killed every year and some species of sharks are becoming endangered. These creatures are dying out because of humans hunting. Sharks can be caught in nets, used for their meat, and even used to make belts and clothing. Students discovered that sharks have more to fear from us than we do from them
With the help of Mrs. Beutler and Mr. Loftis, 2nd graders learned even more through the use of the school's distance learning lab. On November 5th, a Henry Doorly Zoo Shark Conference was set up in the lab. A zoo worker interacted with the students through the use of cameras, televisions, and microphones. Students listed to shark facts, asked question, and even went behind the scenes at the zoo's aquarium.
Our next conference is scheduled in December where we will learn about penguins.
