The Board of Education of the Lyons-Decatur School District No. 20 met in regular session on Monday, March 10, 2008, in the secondary library. Present were C Anderson, Davis, Borchman-Hassebrook, Brehmer, Christiansen, Kellogg, Preston, Vlach and Administrator’s Smith and Hansen. Excused absence: J Anderson.
The duly publicized meeting was opened at 7:30 p.m. and acknowledgement of receipt of notice and agenda was taken by roll call.
The Board recognized Eric Miller for his selection to the Class C All-State Band, 2nd Chair in Wind Ensemble.
The Superintendent named the candidates who filed for the upcoming school board election. There will not be a primary election in May and all candidates will be on the November ballot. A summary was given on the ALICAP Safety Review that took place on February 20th. Changes to IRS regulations on 403b annuities, 2008-2009 BCBS rates increases, projected enrollment for 08-09, and LB 988 and LB1157 were discussed with the Board.
Mr. Smith gave the slideshow put together by Jessica Freese and Tyler Henneman showing the last month’s activities. Mr. Smith shared the mission statement that the teachers worked on. The mission statement is: Empower All Students to Achieve. Terra Nova testing is coming up at the end of March. The Burt County Spelling Bee was held February 19th. Brenna Wakeley placed 2nd, Taylor Mentink placed 3rd, Heidi Miller placed 4th, and Bobby Simpson placed 5th in their divisions. The Science Fair was February 22nd, with winners going to Sac Air Museum March 7th. Heidi Miller placed 3rd with her project. The 2008-2009 calendar and tentative class schedule were presented to the Board.
The minutes of the February meeting were approved and the treasurer’s report was accepted.
The following motions were made and approved:
1. General Fund claims in the amount $259,977.19.
2. Approved the 2008 update to the Lyons-Decatur Northeast Mission and Beliefs statements.
3. Approve the tuck pointing bid from Karr Tuckpointing for the portion of the 1907 building from the top of the building down to the top of the highest windows in the amount of $24,957.00 to be completed in the summer of 2008.
4. Recess from the regular meeting to open the Parent Involvement Policy Hearing at 9:31 p.m.
5. Closed the Parent Involvement Policy Hearing at 9:35 p.m.
6. Approve the 2008-2009 school calendar as presented.
7. Approved the 2008 summer driver education program as presented, with Dawn Moser providing the classroom and driving instruction with the cost set at $165 per student.
8. Nominated Kate Borchman-Hassebrook to run for NASB Legislative Committee, Seat No. 16.
9. Adjourn the meeting at 9:44 p.m.
