Northeast FFA

Blue Jackets, Bright Futures

November 04, 2007

On the 24th through the 27th of October members of the Lyons-Decatur Northeast FFA Chapter attended the 80th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. Those members included Kristen Cameron, Megan Malloy, Karlyn Miller, Danielle King, Jessica Freese, Brittney Doht, Clayton Wheaton, Brantley Vavra, Galvin Vetick, James Kempcke, Eric Miller, and Jacob Niewohner.

Over the four days these individuals enjoyed a career show, general sessions, workshops, and sightseeing. During the general sessions there were various inspirational speakers including the well known, Henry Winkler. Through all this commotion, these members enjoyed National FFA Convention in a much different way. Kristen Cameron, Megan Malloy, Galvin Vetick, and Karlyn Miller as a substitute for Garrett Jensen represented the state of Nebraska at the national level in the Environmental/Natural Resources Contest.

The ENR Contest was held over a two-day period. The competition began with a press release on invasive species, a global issue interview on genetically modified organisms, and also a team activity. The second portion of the contest began with a bus ride to Purdue National Forest; then they proceeded with an exam, live animal identification, a land capability class, an ecosystem analysis, a water quality test, and a Global Positioning System (GPS) section.

This Natural Resources Team faired well receiving 22nd overall out of 47 states and receiving a silver emblem. The top finisher from Nebraska was Megan Malloy, receiving a gold medal. Karlyn Miller and Galvin Vetick were not far behind as they brought home silver medals, and Kristen Cameron was awarded a bronze medal. Along with Dairy Cattle Judging, Land Evaluation, and IMPACT, National FFA Convention has had a wonderful impact on the members of the FFA. Look forward to more news about your Northeast FFA Chapter as they gear up for Leadership Skills Events on November 20th.
