2nd and 3rd graders go on a Field Trip

to the Lyons Water Department

by Jessica Freese

September 05, 2007

Terry Ueding, from the Lyons Water Department gave a wonderful tour to the 2nd and 3rd graders on Tuesday. The students are studying the water cycle and everyone has noticed that the city has a big, modern, new water tower. The city has three big wells that come together at the water plant. Water goes through several filtering processes.

There is a 30,000 gallon holding tank under the plant. Water is then pumped to the water tower by the three big pumps. The water tower is 110 ft. high with a 33 ft. tank on top. This new tank holds 180,000 gallons of water compared to the old tower which held 80,000 gallons. Because of the height of the water tower tank, homes have good water pressure. The old water tower will be taken down. Thank you Mr. Ueding for showing us what happens to the water we drink and use at school.
