Course:  Companion Animals

Length:  Semester (Spring Odd Years)

Grade Level: 10, 11, 12

 

Course Description:

This course is designed for students interested in companion animals from breed identification to anatomy to disease prevention general health care and expose students to career opportunities in the companion animal care.  The domestication of animals for companionship and pleasure will be the foundation of the course.

 

Objectives:

  1. Students will distinguish the basis on which animals are classified as companion, and characterize the different species within classification. AE 12.3.9
  2. Students will recognize the signs of normal and abnormal health and necessary management procedures to maintain the health of companion animals. AE 12.3.10
  3. Students will develop an understanding of the specialized nutritional habits and requirements of companion animals at different life stages. AE 12.3.11
  4. Students will become aware and informed regarding legal aspects of companion animal ownership. AE 12.3.13
  5. Students will identify potential career possibilities and research the required qualifications for employment in various companion animal careers. AE 12.3.14

Grading:

Grades will be determined through quizzes, tests, student participation, work habits, class assignments, presentations, and other projects.   The semester test will be worth 10% of your final semester grade.  The rest will follow the weighting below:
