December 16, 2004

The Lyons-Decatur Mock Trial team competed against Omaha Westside, Omaha-Skutt, Ogallala and Stuart before the performance judges at the State Mock Trial Championship, held December 13 and 14 at the Lancaster County Courthouse in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Members of the team performed three initial rounds; and then it was announced that they were one of the two top teams and would be in the finals against Stuart. After the competition, the Lyons-Decatur team was awarded second place. Stuart will represent the State of Nebraska at National Competition to be held in May, 2005, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

This year’s case, written by volunteer lawyers, involved a criminal case where second degree murder charges against the CEO of a chemical plant has been charged for the death of an officer of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission who had been investigating the death of an exceedingly large number of sandhills cranes along the Platte River.

The competition is sponsored by the Nebraska State Bar Foundation. Members of the Lyons-Decatur state runner-up team are: Lawyers: Stacie Sparks, Alicia Prewett, Jason Bring; Witnesses: Brandi Daberkow, Brock Simonsen, Kurt Heideman, Lindsay Beacom, and Lauren Myers; Coaches are Norma Farrens, Regina Heideman, and Attorney Coach Daniel A. Smith
