JR. HIGH BAND SYLLABUS

JUNIOR HIGH BAND
MR. ROSE

Course Description:

           Junior High Band is designed to develop the skills learned in Elementary Band to a further extent.  Emphasis is placed upon the elements of music, exposure to various styles and composers, and improving technical ability through performances for athletic events, concerts, and solo/ensemble contests.

 

Student Goals:
1.       Students will improve note reading ability to when the ensemble can sight read
        at a grade 1 ½ level and perform within the grade 2 to 2 ½ level.
2.       Students will perform music from a minimum of four different styles and three
        different time periods.
3.       Students will be able to define and perform and the following elements of
        music: 1) tone quality, 2) balance, 3) intonation, 4) dynamics, and 5) articulation.
4.       Students will evaluate their performances (and when applicable, performances
        of others using the elements of music for terminology.
5.       Students will gain awareness of composer, performer, and stylistic history
        (when information is available) for performance pieces.

Multi Cultural Concepts:
1.       The effect cultures have on concert and popular music
2.       Ethnic customs and interpretations portrayed in music

1.       Keyboarding skills
2.       Electronic research
3.       Music composition on a computer
4.       Music Theory on the Internet

Grading:

Students are awarded points in the following categories:
1.       Daily Participation – bringing instrument, other materials, behavior, and effort
2.       Worksheets
3.       Playing Tests
4.       Written Tests
5.       Performance Attendance
6.       Special Projects

a.  PERFORMANCE:

       Performance is worth 45% of final grade.
       Concert: 75 points
       All performances are required.
       Additional performances include playing tests, and other items which
            include performing.
       Jr. High Band students are not required to attend pep band
            performances.  However, they are to know that they are expected to
            participate.  Extra credit will be rewarded towards their grade.
       If a student fails to attend a performance without prior notice, the student will
            not receive credit for the performance.

b.  DAILY/WORKSHEETS:

       Worksheets are worth 45% of final grade.
       You are allowed to correct the worksheets for a higher grade.  Worksheets are
            graded according to amount of points on worksheet.  If you choose not to do
            your worksheet, you will receive 0 points.

c. EXTRA CREDIT

       Honor Band
        •        Auditions – 5 points
        •        Accepted – 10 points
       Lessons – 1 point per lesson
       Practice – 1 point per 30 minutes
       Pep Band – 5 points
       Extra projects as listed below
       Please record all activities on the points log.

d. SEMESTER TEST:

       Semester tests are worth 10% of final grade.

Tardy

The student must be in the room by the end of the second bell.  The following is reprinted from the student handbook.

1st Tardy – warning/teacher recorded
2nd Tardy – 30 minute detention served with the teacher
3rd Tardy – 30 minute detention, served with the teacher, parents contacted
4th Tardy – 60 minute detention served in Principal’s office
5th Tardy – ½ day in-school suspension
6th Tardy – one day in-school suspension
7th Tardy or more – extended in-school suspension or possible out-of-school suspension.

Refusal to make up a tardy will be referred to the principal.

Special Projects:

1.       Written paper on a musical topic.
2.       Musical composition for an individual instrument or group of instruments
3.       Marching Band camp to teach marching fundamentals
4.       Performance at other community/church events other than required events
5.       Attendance at performances/musical productions outside this school or community
6.       Attendance at performances/musical productions within this school (that are not
            required otherwise) and community

Special Rules or Regulations/Participation:

Since Junior High Band is also an extra-curricular activity, students involved in this class are expected to attend the pep band and concert performances.  Though not eligible for a letter award, a special award is given to those who gain enough points to have earned a letter award.  Also, students are under the extra-curricular participation policy set forth by the school concerning course grades and behavior expectations.
